Andy Murray was not the only one battling for championship points on Sunday 7 July! Here at Bracknell ice rink 6 teams were competing in the annual National Team Challenge to try and secure the much admired silver cup with all their supporters in full force. Although often achieving both individual and overall podium places since the competition started in the early 1990s BISC has only won this competition twice, first in 2008 and then in 2010 and was keen to improve on last year’s performance. The 2013 Bracknell team was strong on paper with those responsible having successfully selected several uncontested classes which meant that Bracknell would be awarded the full 6 points as well as fielding some of our best skaters and so everyone was hopeful of a positive result. The individual events certainly didn’t disappoint with our skaters doing brilliantly well and achieving a combination of 4 first places, 2 second places, 1 third and 1 fourth place – giving a total score of 40.5. With only the show number to go Bracknell was in second place just behind Alexander Palace with 41 points and with the other 4 teams so close on our heels all podium places were up for grabs making for an extremely exciting and nail biting finish to the competition. The show number category is always fiercely contended with a huge amount of effort on behalf of not only the skaters and coaches but also parents and helpers who have dedicated their time, effort and skills to ensure that these productions do not disappoint. With the tension mounting at such a level pegging finale to the competition everything hinged on the show number result...... First to skate was Guildford with their original Stomp routine, second was Basingstoke with their magical rendition of Chitty Chitty Bang, Bang, third was Chelmsford with their encounters from the Wild West, fourth was Isle of Wight with their outstanding interpretation from Cats, fifth was Bracknell performing its original ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ routine and finally Alexandra Palace with their entertaining version of Billy Elliott. The Bracknell number with its constant changing scenes including camels, a dragon and not to mention an appearance by ‘Her Majesty’ was well received by the judges and it didn’t take Bracknell long to realise that we were likely to be on the podium with a second place for the show number. The only question remained was as to where the team had come overall. Finally after what seemed a long wait with all the teams on the ice for the presentations, the 2013 National Team Challenge overall winner was announced, bringing huge cheers and applause from the Bracknell contingent as they celebrated the team’s first place and what was an amazing end to a fabulous day.

Huge congratulations to Team Bracknell – you did yourselves proud!

Many thanks go to Bracknell coaches Stacey Gamble and Natasha Hale, BISC committee Jo Armitage and Jo Boland as well as all our talented skaters, flower girls and the many helpers and supporters who contributed to the team’s success.
